New chapter for the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s as it opens landmark building

The Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s University Belfast has opened a new landmark building that honours the legacy of Seamus Heaney and looks ahead to the future of poetry and creative writing on the island of Ireland.

The building was officially opened by Marie Heaney, wife of Seamus; and President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s, Professor Sir Ian Greer, during an event on Tuesday 18 June.

Also in attendance were members of the Heaney family, invited guests including the First and Deputy First Ministers, Michelle O’Neill and Emma Little-Pengelly; Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Micky Murray; Ciaran Hinds; Geraldine Hughes; and staff, students, and friends of the University.

Professor Sir Ian Greer, President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s said: “This centre is more than just a building; it is a tribute to one of Ireland’s greatest poets, Seamus Heaney, and it will be a cornerstone of the University.

Lord Mayor Micky Murray, First Minister Michelle O’Neill, Marie Heaney, Deputy First Minister Emma Little Pengelly, Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Ian Greer and Professor Glenn Patterson

“The new centre will be a landmark on the island of Ireland that will look to the future, providing an inspiring environment for our students, staff, writers, and the wider community to engage in the study and creation of writing.

“The University has contributed hugely to the literary life of Belfast and further afield with many notable alumni such as Paul Muldoon, Medbh McGuckian, Ciaran Carson, and Lisa McGee to name but a few. This new space will harness the development of many more creative talents in the years to come.”

Located at the listed historic building, 38 – 40 University Road and 3 Mount Charles, just a short walk from the main Lanyon building at the heart of the Queen’s campus, the new centre boasts a large venue space, scriptorium (a writing area), offices and creative spaces for students and staff. There is also a public exhibition area which will display the Seamus Heaney archive held by the University for the first time.

Director of the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s, Professor Glenn Patterson commented: “This beautiful new building is a recognition of how the Heaney Centre has developed in the twenty years since it was opened by Seamus Heaney himself under the directorship of the late Ciaran Carson. The ethos – the heart – remains the same, but the new premises offer exciting opportunities for study, for research and for even greater community engagement.”

During the opening event, the square on Mount Charles just beside the new venue, was unveiled as ‘Marie Heaney Square,’ in honour of Marie Heaney.

Catherine Heaney, daughter of Seamus said: “The Seamus Heaney Centre is really important to me and my family because it’s about education. So many people know my father as a poet, and Queen’s is where he started writing poetry, but also it’s where he studied himself and where he started his career as a lecturer and an educator. As far as we’re concerned, it plays a really important part in his legacy.”

Rachel Brown, Christopher Heaney, Ciaran Hinds, Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Ian Greer, Marie Heaney, Catherine Heaney, Professor Glenn Patterson and Geraldine Hughes.

The total cost of the building was £4.9 million, funded by the University’s Capital Development programme and generous philanthropic donations and grants from around the world. £1.7 million has been raised to date through the support of our donors towards the new Seamus Heaney Centre Building, outreach activities and academic positions.

Lead supporters include the Wolfson Foundation, the Weston Foundation and the Brennan-Glucksman Family.

Jessica Warner, Head of Funding at the Wolfson Foundation said: “We’re delighted to have supported this new home for the Seamus Heaney Centre at Queen’s. Support for research and education is at the heart of what we do, and we look forward to seeing the Centre continue to inspire and foster future generations of writers.”

The official opening event was part of several events taking place from 17–27 June, many of which are open to the public.

Joanne’s Fashion Pick of the Week

Recently I had the pleasure of meeting Ireland rugby legend, Willie Anderson whose son is none other than fashion designer, Jonathan ‘JW Anderson’ who has been taking the fashion world by storm. Talk about a talented family!

One of JW Anderson’s latest collaborations is a creative partnership with another Irish powerhouse… Guinness!

After spending time at the home of Guinness in Dublin, exploring the roots of the brand, delving into its archive and walking the tunnels of its iconic brewery, the JW Anderson team worked closely with Guinness to create this collection, weaving in the tactile elements of the Guinness iconography and its liquid.

A ready-to-wear capsule collection will be launched in November 2024 via JW Anderson Stores and online… watch this space.

JW Anderson sends a model down the catwalk at Milan Fashion Week in a cashmere blend yarn jumper, hand knitted in London with Jonathan’s signature embroidery in the style of Arthur Guinness on the back as a nod to the iconic Guinness brand.

MND Heroes and Lady Mary’s Trust Raise the Bar with Joint Fundraiser

The Motor Neurone Disease Association NI and Lady Mary Peters Trust are set to host a spectacular Gala Dinner, drawing inspiration from former British indoor high-jumper Debbie Marrs and World Police and Fire Games volunteer Raymond Hill. This charitable event, designed to raise essential funds for both organisations, will take place on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at the elegant Magheramorne Estate near Larne.

Debbie Marrs, a former Mary Peters Trust athlete and the 1988 British Indoor High Jump Champion, was diagnosed with MDN in recent years. Last December, she raised £8,500 through an indoor triathlon event at Holywood’s Bannatyne Health Club. Excited about the upcoming Gala, Debbie said, “This event will significantly raise the profile of motor neurone disease in Northern Ireland and support people like myself and our families. My daughter Megan and I have benefited from Mary Peters Trust funding and I’m thrilled that the funds raised will be equally divided between those wonderful charities.”

Raymond Hill, a Larne local with a lifelong involvement in sports, was diagnosed with MND in May 2021. He has played a crucial role in organising the World Police and Fire Games and now serves as a committee member for the NI branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. Raymond emphasised the importance of raising MDN awareness, stating “Our Magheramorne Estate event will support critical research and provide necessary assistance to those affected by MDN.”

The Gala Dinner will feature a reception, dinner, auction, guest speakers, and musical performances. Similarly, funds for the Mary Peters Trust will aid young athletes in Northern Ireland, helping them access top facilities and coaching.

Lady Mary Peters expressed her enthusiasm for the event saying, “There is a natural synergy between our two charities, and I’m pleased that we’re coming together for this standout gala in the beautiful Magheramorne Estate. Raymond and Debbie are true inspirations, and we are grateful to Jane Allen and her team for their support.”

Maven Extends Opening Hours to Meet Growing Demand

Maven Extends Opening Hours to Meet Growing Demand for Sunday Shopping

Independent Belfast interiors boutique, Maven, has announced extended opening hours in response to increasing consumer demand for Sunday shopping. Founded in 2013 by sisters Catherine and Patricia McGinnis, Maven is located in the historic former Bank of Ireland building on Belfast’s bustling Lisburn Road. The store is renowned for its eclectic collection of contemporary homewares and furniture, featuring prominent European brands such as & Tradition, Carl Hansen & Son, and Gubi, alongside independent makers like Annadale Brickworks and Field Day.

This strategic move to open on Sundays aligns with Maven’s 11th anniversary and the first year at their new flagship location on Lisburn Road, set to be celebrated in early July. Reflecting on evolving customer needs, Catherine and Patricia decided to extend their opening hours to accommodate the growing demand for in-store shopping.

Patricia McGinnis commented on the decision, highlighting the influence of changing shopping trends. “We pride ourselves on listening to and responding to our customers’ needs. Moving to a larger premises last year allowed us to expand our product offering significantly, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. By opening on Sundays, we provide our customers with more opportunities to visit and experience our curated collections firsthand.”

Maven Interior

The new Sunday hours cater to a relaxed shopping experience, particularly benefiting customers with busy schedules. Additionally, the extended hours aim to attract more visitors from the south of Ireland, who often focus their shopping trips on weekends.

The decision also led to the creation of four new full- and part-time roles, expanding Maven’s team to eight employees. This growth supports the new seven-day operation and ensures that the boutique can continue to offer exceptional service and a wide range of products.

Catherine McGinnis emphasized the importance of adapting to customers’ lifestyles. “As people’s lives become busier, leisure time becomes more precious. Sundays offer a more relaxed shopping environment, and we want to be available for our customers whenever they have the time to visit us.”

Despite a thriving e-commerce platform at wearemaven.co.uk, the sisters recognized the increasing demand for a tactile in-store experience. The expanded hours and team will help Maven meet this demand and continue to provide exceptional service and products to their growing customer base.
