Shortcross Launches a Pair of Truly Unique Irish Whiskeys

The distillers of Shortcross Irish Whiskey and Gin have revealed the latest expressions of Shortcross Irish Whiskey. These new Irish Whiskey’s were distilled, matured and bottled at Rademon Estate Distillery, which was founded by husband and wife team David and Fiona Boyd-Armstrong, and was the first new distillery in Northern Ireland in over 100 years to release their own whiskey.

The first new expression is the Shortcross 7-year-old Cognac and range Liqueur Cask Single Malt Irish Whiskey. A whiskey whose journey began in early 2016 when the distillery secured its first batch of peated malted barley. This malted barley was then mashed, brewed and double-distilled on the distilleries copper pot stills.

Shortcross Distillery’s Single Malt Irish Whiskey.

Rademon are the first distillery in Northern Ireland to produce plated Irish whiskey in over two generations, Director of Distilling and Blending David Boyd-Armstrong describes the journey to get to that point as quite an adventure.

David said: “When we first approached our malt suppliers with a request for peated malt they each in turn told us that we were crazy, that’s not what you want to be doing, and that no one wants peated or smoky Irish whiskey. Of course, the irony now is that peated or smoky Irish whiskey is one of the hottest areas of the category.”

Distilling the peated malted barley was one thing, but then David wanted to use a cask no one had used before in the Irish Whiskey industry. “Speaking to several of the cooperages that we use we told them that we were seeking a cask type that would be distinctive and unique, and while they suggested several different types, I noticed something that they hadn’t suggested which was an ex-Cognac and Orange Liqueur Cask. Instinctively, I knew this could work really well and, in my mind, I had this concept of a smoky chocolate orange style whiskey,” added David.

As an industry and category first, this truly unique expression is described as: ‘On the nose there are notes of orange blossom, fresh mint and tropical fruits while walking through a summer garden. The palate leads with orange notes, as the malt makes an appearance. Milk chocolate combines with orange and mint, as the smoke shines. Sweet smoke and chocolate orange combine, giving a long, rich and oily finish with hints of leather coming through.’

Shortcross Distillery’s Single Malt Irish Whiskey.

Limited to less than 1,000 bottles annually this expression is bottled at 70cl/46%abv. RRP £65.00GBP/€75.00.

Launching alongside the above whiskey is a second new expression. The second new Shortcross 5-year-old Distiller’s Duo Irish Whiskey, blends Shortcross Single Malt and Shortcross Single Pot Still Irish whiskey’s together to create a blend that showcases the distillery’s character. The new whiskey has been aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and virgin American Oak (Quercus Alba) casks.

David Boyd-Armstrong, Director of Distilling and Blending describes the journey to create this expression: “Crafting the Distiller’s Duo has been a real testament to the quality of the Irish Whiskey we produce here at Rademon Esatate Distillery. We always look to see how we can take our Irish Whiskey and create something truly unique, and by combining our Single Malt and Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey together we are able to amplify the flavours and aromas of the malt and combine them with the spice and lush mouthfeel of the pot still to create a whiskey that we believe showcases our distillery’s character in the finest way possible. Uniquely, this is also the first time that this blend has been created where both whiskey’s have been distilled and matured at the same distillery.”

The Shortcross 5-year-old Distiller’s Duo Irish Whiskey tasting notes are described as: ‘A rich and fruit nose that is reminiscent of caramelised toffee apples, the palate leads with milk chocolate and sweet cereal notes from the malt. Over time these open up to reveal fresh hints of green apple and cola cubes, with a decadent and mouth-coating finish with chewy pot still spices and lingering note of red fruits, linseed and tobacco leaf.

Shortcross Distillery’s brand new Distiller’s Duo Irish Whiskey.

This is a core expression and bottled at 70cl/46%abv. RRP £55.00GBP/€55.00.

“Our Irish whiskey journey is one that is truly obsessive in the creation of flavour,” said David. “We obsess to create those yet to be found and to recreate those flavours lost in time. With the launch of this new expression of Shortcross Irish Whiskey we believe we are showcasing this obsession and the quality of our whiskeys.”

Managing Director, Fiona Boyd-Armstrong, added: “These new Shortcross Irish Whiskeys are the first of a new range of releases and they are already on route to our key export markets for launch in Spring 2024 and are available now across the island of Ireland.”

Dementia NI Releases Single and Music Video

This Dementia Action Week (13th – 19th May), local charity Dementia NI has released a unique single and music video, written by Dementia NI members and local singer-songwriter Cora Kelly, giving those newly diagnosed with dementia hope that they aren’t alone and there is support available to help them live as well as possible.

The single and music video will raise funds for Dementia NI, a member-led charity which empowers local people with dementia to live well and drive positive change in dementia services and in the community.

Dementia NI members, all of whom are living with dementia, created the lyrics to ‘The Journey’, with singer-songwriter Cora Kelly putting their words to music. The message of the song is clear: life goes on after a diagnosis and with support it is possible to live will with dementia.

Dementia NI member Allison Batchelor, 64, from Belfast, who is living with Alzheimer’s disease, said: “Traditionally, music performers have released songs in the charts that have focused on family members or carers’ experiences and feelings about their loved ones with dementia. We, the Dementia NI members, wanted to turn the tables and take a stand on the stigma around dementia. We wanted the public to hear OUR voices through song to give those recently diagnosed some hope and help everyone understand what it’s like living with dementia from our perspectives.”

The song shines a light on what it feels like to receive a diagnosis, with each verse representing a different stage in the dementia journey, moving from shock and fear through to acceptance and hope.

A heart-warming video accompanies the track, starring Dementia NI members and giving insight into their day-to-day lives, showing that you can be active and keep doing the things you enjoy following your diagnosis.

Dementia NI member Martin McHugh, 72, from Belfast, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease aged 63, explained how the piece was composed: “Cora Kelly came to our Empowerment Groups and really listened as we each told our diagnosis stories. Then she went away and put our words and perspectives to music. It moves me to tears when I listen to it. It’s very true to what those of us who have received a diagnosis are going through.

“We named the song ‘The Journey’ because it describes the journey you go through when you receive a dementia diagnosis. I was in a bad place initially when I got my diagnosis. It takes time and strength to come to terms with it but there is help out there – from family, friends and organisations like Dementia NI. Their Empowerment Groups changed my life and helped me connect with other people with a diagnosis at a time when I felt very low. It gave me hope and a will to carry on and made me realise I could have a good life.”

Dementia NI currently has around 14 Dementia Empowerment Groups across Northern Ireland. These groups provide a place for local people who have been diagnosed with dementia – and are in the early to middle stages of the condition – to come together to provide life-changing peer support to one another and to drive positive change in dementia services and in the community.

Singer-songwriter Cora Kelly, from Killough, County Down, added: “It’s been a pleasure working with Dementia NI members across Northern Ireland. My meetings with them have challenged my own assumptions about dementia. It’s fantastic that Dementia NI members are so positive and are living happy and fulfilled lives. They’re doing an amazing job in bringing awareness to this condition.”

Dementia NI Communications Lead, Jane Gillow, said: “We hope everyone loves ‘The Journey’ as much as we do! We couldn’t be prouder of our members for creating such inspiring lyrics and sharing the message that there is still life to live following a diagnosis. Research shows that one in three of us will develop dementia in our lifetime. We want to highlight that our Empowerment Groups are here for those with a diagnosis of dementia, in the early to middle stages of the condition, to access life-changing peer support, make new friends and be part of their community. This Dementia Action Week, we’re calling on everyone to get behind ‘The Journey’ and donate vital funds to Dementia NI.”

Oh Yeah Music Centre Wins Grassroots Venue: Spirit of the Scene Award

Oh Yeah Music Centre makes history by winning Grassroots Venue: Spirit of the Scene Award, supported by the Music Venue Trust.

The Oh Yeah Music Centre was celebrated as part of the annual Music Week Award in the JW Marriot Grosvenor House in London. The Belfast venue is the first in Northern Ireland to win this major award at last night’s prestigious event in London.

The winner from a shortlist of ten venues from all over the UK including The Windmill in London, The Green Door Store in Brighton and the Leadmill in Sheffield was decided by public vote.

Led by Music Venue Trust, the award signifies the importance of venues across the UK. Against the backdrop of two grassroots music venues closing per week due to chronic underfunding and crippling rising costs, this award is a positive step in recognising and supporting their important function as incubators of live music and talent development.

Since 2007, the Oh Yeah Music Centre, a registered charity, has provided ‘open doors to music’ from its base in the Cathedral Quarter area of Belfast. They dedicated the award to the music community in Northern Ireland, highlighting it as a collective win for the significant impact NI Music has on the community, as well as its contributions to events, tourism and the broader music industry.

Charlotte Drydon, CEO of Oh Yeah Music Centre, said: “To win this award means everything. Not only is it official recognition at a major industry awards event, but it’s also a public endorsement of our work. Live music makes a huge collective economic and social contribution to our lives, and we are so proud to bring this home to Northern Ireland. Thank you to everyone that voted for us and massive thanks to Music Venue Trust for making sure grassroots venues are recognised at this prestigious event.”

Mark David, CEO and Founder of Music Venue Trust, said: “This award is about recognising the incredible work delivered by hundreds of fantastic grassroots music venues in every part of the UK. The Oh Yeah Music Centre is the perfect winner of this award, encapsulating the very best that the grassroots sector offers; fantastic programming, community engagement, support for the very best new talent. The Oh Yeah team have done so much for music in Northern Ireland and beyond, and it’s great to see that work celebrated with the Spirit of the Scene Award.”

Northern Ireland’s Building of the Year 2024

The Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA) has awarded the Liam McCormick prize for Northern Ireland’s Building of the Year to the new Ulster University Belfast Campus.

The £364 million campus, stacked 14 floors high in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter, was designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, with McAdam Design, Scott Tallon Walker and White Ink Architects. The projects also received the Living Places Award, which honours developments that excel in placemaking.

The judges noted how ‘the complex, expansive brief has been accommodated on a challenging, irregular site through the architects’ intelligence and skill’ and how the project is ‘socially, economically, and culturally important both to Belfast itself and to the very idea of ‘city’.’

Northern Ireland’s House of the Year accolade was won by House on Redbrae Farm, by McGonigle McGrath architects, with Alice Nickell named Project Architect of the Year for her work on this rural Co. Down project. McGonigle McGrath also scopped a second design award for Longhurst, a private house in South Belfast.

Hall Black Douglas Architects won two awards for conservation projects. The first as the refurbishment of the long-abandoned St Comgall’s School in West Belfast into a multi-use community hub. This also earned the Falls Community Council an award for Client of the Year. The practice’s second winner was a £100 million project they delivered in partnership with JCA Architects, that saw Primark’s Bank Buildings resurrected from the ashes following a devastating fire in 2018. This project picked up the Conservation Award.

Architect Patrick Bradley secured both the Sustainability Award and the Small Project Award with his shipping container home, Barney’s Ruins, which he built floating above the ruins of his family’s 200-year-old farmstead near Maghera.

Ciarán Fox, RSUA Director, said: “Belfast, as with many city centres, is facing multiple challenges with depopulation, working from home, online shopping and limited public investment. It is bold properties like the new Ulster University campus and the rebuilding of Bank Buildings by Primark that help bring life and energy to the city centre.  One, an exceptional example of the conservation of our built heritage, and the other an embodiment of the city’s future aspirations.

“The quality of the architecture in a city has a direct bearing on its success. I hope these two projects can act as an encouragement to our political, business and civic leaders to work even harder to create the conditions that allow architecture to flourish in Belfast and across Northern Ireland.

“On the housing front, hats off to McGonigle McGrath who have completed a hat trick, winning Northern Ireland’s House of the Year for the third year running. Every year we change our judging panel experts from across Britain and Ireland but, time after time, each new panel reaches the same conclusion – that McGonigle McGrath’s work is outstanding.”

The RSUA Design Award Gala Dinner took place on Thursday night in The MAC Belfast, designed by Hackett Hall McKnight, which itself was awarded a prestigious RIBA National Award in 2012 and was nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.

At the ceremony, guest of honour Infrastructure Minister, John O’Dowd, said: “Architects, clients and built environment professional have a critical role in designing and creating an environment in which diverse and sustainable communities can thrive – a positive environment in which people live, work, study and relax.

“I am very aware of the critical role that my Department plays upon the lives and well-being of every person, every hour of every day. Whether it’s roads and greenways; waterways; drainage and flood defences, or by the provision of public transport, if we get out infrastructure and strategic policies right, and if we invest in them appropriately, it can be a real game changer.

“We all know that they can create the foundations for a more productive and prosperous economy. They can also lay the foundations for future growth for our businesses – and for the great architecture that enriches our lives. The RSUA Awards allows us the opportunity to recognise and celebrate those great works of architecture and I want to congratulate all the teams involved in delivering the varied projects that were shortlisted this year.”

All entries for the RSUA Awards were required to have been in use for at least one year so that the judging panel could better evaluate the sustainability and real-life performance of the projects. The six winning projects are now in the running for a RIBA National Award, celebrating the best of architecture across the whole of the UK.

The Awards were sponsored by JP Corry and Meta Technologies, the Department of Infrastructure, the Department for Communities and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

‘Sale di Mare’ Offers NI Drinkers A Taste Of Italian Coast

United Wines launches newest member of Birra Moretti ‘famiglia’ in Northern Ireland.

A refreshing new Italian beer with ‘a hint of sea salt’ has reached Northern Ireland’s shores, courtesy of leading lager brand Birra Moretti  and Craigavon-based distributor United Wines.

Sale di Mare, which translates as ‘salt of the sea’, is the newest member of the Birra Moretti ‘famiglia’ and promises to refresh the local lager market with an authentic taste of the Italian coast.

Harvested from Sicily, Sale di Mare (pronounced ‘sah-lay dee Mahers-ray’) is a naturally unfiltered, medium-bodied premium lager (4.8% ABV), brewed with Italian passion and the finest quality ingredients.

Slightly hazy in colour, its extra hop aromas give a fuller taste than Birra Moretti L’Autentica, with herbal aromas of citrus and pine.

With sea salt commonly used in food to enrich flavours, Sale di Mare isn’t just great as a stand-alone beer, but also paired with food, its taste profile perfectly complementing some of Italy’s finest coast-inspired dishes.

United Wines Brand Manager, David Greenlees, believes the new lager will tempt ‘curious’ drinkers and encourage more people to discover beer this summer. He said, “We are absolutely thrilled to introduce Sale di Mare to the Northern Ireland market. With its crisp, refreshing taste and very cool Italian coast vibe, it’s a perfect beer for the summer, so let’s hope we get some well-deserved sunshine over the next few months! If not, just close your eyes, take a sip and imagine you’re basking in the Sicilian sun.

“Research shows that 37%** of consumers like trying new drinks brands, and we’re sure that the Northern Ireland public will be very curious to try this interesting new beer from the popular Birra Moretti brand.

“Lager is the second most traded-up category** with one-fifth of consumers likely to trade up, and over half of consumers willing to pay more for better quality.

“The launch of Sale di Mare in Northern Ireland gives local outlets a great opportunity to build on their premium continental lager offering with a huge market-leading brand.”

Italian beers account for almost two-thirds* of all lager sales in the UK, with Birra Moretti the biggest brand, having surpassed over £1 billion of retail sales in the last year.

The company has developed Sale di Mare in response to the rising demand for Continental-style lagers. With a strong 22% value growth* in the UK over the past year, Continental lager is the largest sub-category in packaged lager – worth over £330 million* and stocked in over 70% of all On-Trade outlets.

Sale di Mare is now available from United Wines in 330ml and 660ml bottles.
