NI Chambers of Commerce Lead Efforts on ‘Economic Game Changers’

Northern Ireland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NI Chamber) has hosted a delegation of business leaders from Cork and Dublin, who are visiting Belfast as part of a first-of-its-kind collaboration, focused on enhancing all-island connectivity and fostering collaboration in areas of strength.

Delivered in partnership with Dublin Chamber and Cork Chamber, the mission was focused on connecting people, places and businesses in pursuit of economic prosperity. A forty strong group, which included senior representatives from airports, ports, tourism, business and public transport agencies in both jurisdictions visited key development sites, including Belfast Harbour and the new Grand Central Station, to discuss what future investment in infrastructure could deliver for economic growth. They also heard from innovative businesses clustered in the focus areas, as well as how universities and colleges play a key role in developing key growth sectors. The Chambers have agreed to continue to look for opportunities to work together.

The two-day dialogue was welcomed by elected representatives including Economy Minister, Deirdre Hargey, Infrastructure Minister John O’Dowd and Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, Dara Calleary TD who led a specially convened Ministerial meeting to discuss key policy tasks from this group to both governments, including better rail connectivity, the possibility of restoration of flights between Cork and Belfast, further investment in ports, enhanced tourism links and the promotion of collaboration through all-island innovation clusters.

Addressing the group, Economy Minister, Dierdre Hargey, said: “My department us already driving all-island collaboration in key economic areas, such as tourism and sector clusters and I’m keen that this all-island approach continues and grows.

“We have much to gain in sharing our skills and learning across the island, to ensure we have a buoyant workforce – both north and south – ready to support local businesses to grow, or indeed, foreign direct investment firms, who are always impressed by our home grown talent.

“By supporting innovation in local companies, creating clusters of excellence, and driving initiatives such as the Fintech Corridor, we will not only be improving the productivity of the North, but further enhancing an island-wide reputation which is already attracting international acclaim, and leading globally.”

Infrastructure Minister, John O’Dowd, accompanied the delegation to the new Grand Central Station site, which will open later in the year. He said: “Connecting our island North to South and East to West is the key to the economic prosperity and the social well-being of our people. Infrastructure development on the roads, through rail connections and our ports, will support the ongoing efforts to develop trade and tourism. Grand Central Station, which is a fantastic new transformative transport asset, will be a game-changer and will play its part in enhancing connections. I look forward to this important collaboration continuing for the benefit of everyone on the island of Ireland.”

Minister Dara Calleary, Minister of State for Trade Promotion, Digital and Company Regulation, emphasised the significance of this mission, saying: “We have seen phenomenal growth in North South trade in recent years, which is one of the key achievements of the peace process. Combined cross-border goods and services trade has seen a threefold increase since the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. The Government is committed to protecting and bolstering these trade links and to building on the economic dividends of the peace process to the benefit of all parts of or shared island.”

Speaking about the collaboration, Suzanne Wylie, Chief Executive, NI Chamber, said: “Across so many sectors, the business community is leading out with great ambition to strengthen all-island trade. In multiple cases, our member companies are already ahead of the game, so this is about how we, as three Chambers of Commerce, can elevate it further by finding the synergies which currently exist and making the strongest business case possible for future investment in economic game changes which will deliver mutual and shared benefit.

“Over the course of these two days, we will be profiling the role that ports play in driving regional economies, discussing how we can incentivise more innovative business clusters and create a shared ecosystem. Our guests have seen for themselves the development of the largest integrated bus and train station on this island and, together, we have conferred around our mutual aspirations for faster trains and more connected air routes. We are also focused on how to raise the potential for much greater impact from tourism development.

“it is an exciting initiative and has been a real privilege for NI Chamber to host the first delegation along with out members including Translink, Belfast Harbour and B-Secur, showcasing this region’s unique strengths and capabilities, as well as its vast growth potential. Our intention is that this will grow into a solid partnership, driving forward the fundamental tenets of prosperity and competitiveness.”

Joe O’Neill, CEO at Belfast Harbour Commissioners, hosted the delegation, telling them that: “Belfast Harbour is Northern Ireland’s primary gateway to the rest of the world, so it plays a hugely significant role as an economic enabler for the region. The same applies to major ports in Dublin and Cork, which are also maritime gateways for trade on the island.

“Over decades, our ports have supported evolving industrial landscapes and changing tourism patterns. As we race to decarbonise energy systems, our port infrastructure must stay a step ahead. At Belfast Harbour, we are committed to building a truly sustainable, clean, Green Port which plays a pivotal role in a highly connected infrastructure eco-system. This visit by Chambers of Commerce has been a time opportunity to combine our experiences and shared aspirations.”

Conor Healy, Cork Chamber CEO, said: “Northern Ireland’s unique position as part of the UK internal market while, at the same time, having unique access to the EU’s single market of nearly 450 million people provides a solid opportunity for growth. Enhanced rail services, improved port connectivity and the re-establishment of the Belfast-Cork flight are essential to harnessing opportunities in trade, tourism, education and innovation. By building relationships and connectivity, it will ensure that Belfast and the surrounding areas, Dublin and Cork, can prosper and grow together, using these unrivalled opportunities as key economic engines of the island.”

Mary Rose Burke, Dublin Chamber CEO, said: “The collaboration between our chambers is a testament to the shared vision we hold for an interconnected and thriving island economy. Dublin, as the economic hub, will benefit immensely from enhanced connectivity with Cork and Belfast, driving not just economic growth but also cultural exchange. We in Dublin Chamber have long advocated for a greater degree of cross-border co-operation and this visit is a continuation of that. Our island economy can only continue to grow and this will be aided significantly by further investment in infrastructure such as the Narrow Water Bridge, including €600 million towards the proposed upgrade of the A5 road and key to this will be a high speed rail link from Cork to Dublin and onto Belfast and beyond. This initiative represents a bold step forward in leveraging our geographic and economic strengths to create a cohesive strategy that benefits all our communities.”

Together, the NI, Cork and Dublin Chambers are focused on progressing five key aspirations which are:

Better Rail Connectivity for Cork-Dublin-Belfast: Aiming to create seamless higher-speed rail links that will significantly reduce travel times and enhance regional connectivity.

Restoration of Cork-Belfast Flights: Restoring domestic flights between Belfast and Cork will enhance business and tourism links, making the island of Ireland a more attractive destination for visitors and investors.

Funding Allocation for Ports: Securing investments to future-proof the three major ports, ensuring they can support economic growth and industrial advancements.

All-Island Innovation Clusters: Promoting collaboration between industry and education to foster innovation and create competitive clusters across the island.

Enhancing Tourism Links: Developing strong tourism links by harnessing regional strengths, place branding and evolving the story of Ireland to represent a modern island.

Bushmills Launch 14 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Bushmills Irish Whiskey, from the world’s oldest licensed whiskey distillery, announce the launch of a new 14 Year Old single malt. This bold new addition joins an iconic lineup comprising the Bushmills 10, 16 and 21 Year Olds and the recently released 25 and 30 Year Old expressions.

Bushmills’ new 14 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey.

Unlike its sherry-inspired siblings in the Bushmills prestige range, the new 14 Year Old is finished in Malaga casks, making it unmistakably different. Its story starts in first and second-fill bourbon barrels where it’s meticulously matured for a minimum of 14 years. Following this, it’s then exclusively finished for up to 12 months in Muscat of Alexandria white wine Malaga casks – adding a luscious fruit intensity and beautiful smoothness.

These Spanish casks imbue the whiskey with rich scents of sweet honey, vanilla and gentle aromas of mandarin orange married with arm spice. On the palate, expect an enticing union of mango, pineapple and apricot with hints of cinnamon, vanilla and warm caramel. This all precedes a long, crisp and comforting finish that’s already proving popular with whiskey connoisseurs who appreciate the time-honoured craft and innovation synonymous with Bushmills.

For over 400 years, Bushmills has been pursuing uncrushed perfection and has – over time – established the greatest reserve of aged single malt Irish whiskey in the world. Access to this army of unique casks offers a certain freedom of experimentation that has undoubtedly led to this latest masterpiece, which draws inspiration from Ireland’s breathtaking and ever-changing north Antrim coast.

This new whiskey marks a particular milestone for master blender Alex Thomas who is dedicated to exciting and delighting whiskey enthusiasts with new expressions that epitomise Bushmills’ unmistakable innovative spirit.

Bushmills’ new 14 Year Old Single Malt Irish Whiskey.

She explains: “The team here at Bushmills has always had a restless spirit. We’ve an insatiable curiosity when it comes to whiskey innovation. I really wanted to step out of my comfort zone and create an exciting taste experience for everyone – something a bit unexpected that’s unlike any other expression in our core range.”

Talking about the craftsmanship of the new whiskey, Alex proudly highlights that the Spanish fortified wine was patiently left to soak deep into the grain of the oak barrels for four to five years, seasoning the wood with a symphony of summer fruit balanced with a delicate hint of cinnamon and ginger spices. The casks were then sent to the Old Bushmills Distillery just three days after being emptied to ensure optimal freshness and fragrance.

Radiating ruby-red exuberance and an intriguingly rich and smooth character, Alex is confident the warm, mellow taste and fresh, fruity notes of the 14 Year Old will intrigue wine lovers, welcome fledgling whiskey drinkers and excite whiskey’s most passionate flavour explorers alike.

She adds: “I’ve been on the journey, so I know the 14 Year Old’s exceptional quality is undeniable. I also have a lot of experience with Muscat of Alexandria, the grape variety carefully chosen to produce the Malaga wine we use to season our oak barrels. Wine lovers will know this is one the oldest grapes in the world and produces incredible flavour profiles. I really feel this is a whiskey for everyone.”

Bushmills 14 Year Old is available across the island of Ireland with an RSP of €70/£60 per bottle.

Ards Arts Centre Welcomes New Exhibitions in June

Ards Arts Centre in Newtownards welcomes two new art exhibitions for the month of June: Meilé, a solo exhibition by Juste Bernotatie and Humans, a solo exhibition by Aoife Tolerton.

Juste Bernotaite is a Lithuanian painter based in Belfast. Her practice combines the exploration of the history of her motherland, Lithuania, as well as personal experiences growing up there. Each work is an attempt at navigating different threads and histories from the past.

Juste Bernotaite.

Mielé (Lithuanian for ‘love’), will feature a series of paintings that invite viewers to immerse themselves in the complexities of a landscape that’s affected by unrecognisable trauma, grief, frustration and forebodings. Juste explores the history of their homelands and navigates her relationship to landscapes in the hopes of ‘releasing’ it in the medium of oil paint. The exhibition can be viewed in the Georgian Gallery.

Meilé, oil on canvas, by Juste Bernotaite.

Bangor-based, Aoife Tolerton, seeks to explore human interaction and reaction to their environment through her work. Exploring the themes of mass tourism, adverse environmental effect, and how humans play a role in this. She is particularly interested in the conjunction of realism and abstraction.

Her work is figurative, depicting individuals and groups at leisure, exploring their behaviour and mannerisms. Translating people-watching onto canvas, Aoife focuses on the distinguishing characteristics and detail of her subjects, removing background context to draw the viewer into the personalities and story that is unfolding. Humans will be on display in the Sunburst Gallery.

Both exhibitions open on Friday 31st May and continue until Thursday 27th June. Admission to Ards Arts Centre is free.

Northern Ireland’s Building of the Year 2024

The Royal Society of Ulster Architects (RSUA) has awarded the Liam McCormick prize for Northern Ireland’s Building of the Year to the new Ulster University Belfast Campus.

The £364 million campus, stacked 14 floors high in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter, was designed by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, with McAdam Design, Scott Tallon Walker and White Ink Architects. The projects also received the Living Places Award, which honours developments that excel in placemaking.

The judges noted how ‘the complex, expansive brief has been accommodated on a challenging, irregular site through the architects’ intelligence and skill’ and how the project is ‘socially, economically, and culturally important both to Belfast itself and to the very idea of ‘city’.’

Northern Ireland’s House of the Year accolade was won by House on Redbrae Farm, by McGonigle McGrath architects, with Alice Nickell named Project Architect of the Year for her work on this rural Co. Down project. McGonigle McGrath also scopped a second design award for Longhurst, a private house in South Belfast.

Hall Black Douglas Architects won two awards for conservation projects. The first as the refurbishment of the long-abandoned St Comgall’s School in West Belfast into a multi-use community hub. This also earned the Falls Community Council an award for Client of the Year. The practice’s second winner was a £100 million project they delivered in partnership with JCA Architects, that saw Primark’s Bank Buildings resurrected from the ashes following a devastating fire in 2018. This project picked up the Conservation Award.

Architect Patrick Bradley secured both the Sustainability Award and the Small Project Award with his shipping container home, Barney’s Ruins, which he built floating above the ruins of his family’s 200-year-old farmstead near Maghera.

Ciarán Fox, RSUA Director, said: “Belfast, as with many city centres, is facing multiple challenges with depopulation, working from home, online shopping and limited public investment. It is bold properties like the new Ulster University campus and the rebuilding of Bank Buildings by Primark that help bring life and energy to the city centre.  One, an exceptional example of the conservation of our built heritage, and the other an embodiment of the city’s future aspirations.

“The quality of the architecture in a city has a direct bearing on its success. I hope these two projects can act as an encouragement to our political, business and civic leaders to work even harder to create the conditions that allow architecture to flourish in Belfast and across Northern Ireland.

“On the housing front, hats off to McGonigle McGrath who have completed a hat trick, winning Northern Ireland’s House of the Year for the third year running. Every year we change our judging panel experts from across Britain and Ireland but, time after time, each new panel reaches the same conclusion – that McGonigle McGrath’s work is outstanding.”

The RSUA Design Award Gala Dinner took place on Thursday night in The MAC Belfast, designed by Hackett Hall McKnight, which itself was awarded a prestigious RIBA National Award in 2012 and was nominated for the European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture.

At the ceremony, guest of honour Infrastructure Minister, John O’Dowd, said: “Architects, clients and built environment professional have a critical role in designing and creating an environment in which diverse and sustainable communities can thrive – a positive environment in which people live, work, study and relax.

“I am very aware of the critical role that my Department plays upon the lives and well-being of every person, every hour of every day. Whether it’s roads and greenways; waterways; drainage and flood defences, or by the provision of public transport, if we get out infrastructure and strategic policies right, and if we invest in them appropriately, it can be a real game changer.

“We all know that they can create the foundations for a more productive and prosperous economy. They can also lay the foundations for future growth for our businesses – and for the great architecture that enriches our lives. The RSUA Awards allows us the opportunity to recognise and celebrate those great works of architecture and I want to congratulate all the teams involved in delivering the varied projects that were shortlisted this year.”

All entries for the RSUA Awards were required to have been in use for at least one year so that the judging panel could better evaluate the sustainability and real-life performance of the projects. The six winning projects are now in the running for a RIBA National Award, celebrating the best of architecture across the whole of the UK.

The Awards were sponsored by JP Corry and Meta Technologies, the Department of Infrastructure, the Department for Communities and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

Glorious Getaway

Ulster Tatler’s Joanne Harkness visits Lawlor’s of Naas, a 4-star hotel in County Kildare.

It is always a treat to have a weekend getaway and going over the border feels far enough away without having to board a plane and go through the dreaded airport delays. My husband and I recently took a road trip down to County Kildare, to stay in the renowned Lawlor’s of Naas for some luxury relaxation. This four-star hotel sits in the heart of the town, where it has stood proudly for over 100 years.

Weather warnings and sudden snowfall had hit Ireland in the lead up to our stay, but with a stroke of luck, on the day we arrived in Naas it was glorious – spring was finally making an appearance.

Our first port of call after our three-hour drive was the opulent lobby area, where we were seated by the roaring fire to enjoy a fabulous afternoon tea. Not meaning to boast, but we recently had afternoon tea in The Plaza in New York, so expectations were high… how would Lawlor’s compare? I’m pleased to report that it held its own – there were certainly similarities in the décor and the food choices. Highlights for me were the Coronation chicken and spinach wrap, the savoury scone with herb cream cheese and Parma ham, the chocolate mousse and the delectable lemon cake, all of which were washed down with a refreshing peppermint tea… and a glass of Prosecco!

Before we checked into our room we took a stroll through Naas to get a feel for the town. It has an array of boutiques, cafés, restaurants and high street shops – I particularly enjoyed browsing through books in Barker & Jones where I bought The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which was a must-read recommendation from our Ulster Tatler digital columnist, Victoria Quinn.

After our jaunt around town, we headed up to our room to relax before dinner. The room was lovely – it was traditional with a modern twist. The pièce de résistance was the hidden flat screen TV which came up from the bottom of the bed at the touch of a button – very impressive!

In the evening we headed down to Vi’s restaurant, which is the focal point of the lobby. A spectacular, circular bar sits in the centre of the restaurant and the surrounding tables were filled with families and couples enjoying a Saturday evening together. The contemporary-style menu showcases high-quality ingredients, creating dishes that were truly delicious. I started with the roasted pumpkin, bacon and Burrata salad, which was served with pomegranate, tossed seeds and torn focaccia. It was light and refreshing and combined a mixture of flavours and textures that worked perfectly together. My choice of main course was the crispy skin salmon, which came served with sautéed bacon, pearl onion dressing, rissole potatoes and broccoli. I loved the saltiness of the bacon against the fresh salmon and the crunch of the zesty pearl onions. My husband went for the strip loin steak and scrapped his plate clean, which was a good sign. Finally, to finish we shared the chocolate fondue, which came with an array of treats for dipping into the warm chocolate sauce.

The high standard of food continued with breakfast the following morning, which offered both continental and hot buffets; the best kind of hotel breakfast in my opinion. We both enjoyed a traditional Irish cooked breakfast, which set us up for the day ahead. After what was a thoroughly enjoyable stay in Lawlor’s of Naas, we checked out at 11am, but our trip wasn’t over just yet! The hotel is located just a 15-minute drive from Kildare Village, so of course we had to make a stop at the ultimate shopping destination before heading home.

Belfast’s Korean Innovation Twin

Belfast and the Administration Capital of Republic of Korea, Sejong City, have pledged today to collaborate on research, business and projects that harness urban innovation to support growth in their respective regions.

A Belfast delegation led by Lord Mayor Councillor, Ryan Murphy, has visited:

  • The National Research Council for Economics, Humanities, and Social Sciences (NRC), Korea’s national think tank
  • Sejong Technopark,
  • The Sejong Centre for Creative Economy and Innovation;
  • and The Smart City Centre, which manages Sejong’s city operations.

Belfast Lord Mayor, Councillor Ryan Murphy said: “Harnessing innovation is a crucial part of a successful Belfast economy. So, when Innovation City Belfast – a partnership between Belfast’s main institutions – proposed that we should join the Innovation Twins programme, Belfast City Council gave the initiative its full support.

“It’s been fantastic to celebrate the signing of an Innovation Twins Roadmap with Sejong. This will support mutually beneficial learning in areas such as satellite and cybersecurity, urban mobility, net zero, innovation, trade and investment.

“The Roadmap, which we’ve developed with Connected Places Catapult, will contribute to both cities’ sustainable growth ambitions, and deliver benefits for citizens, businesses and institutions.”

Mayor Che, Sejong said: “We are delighted to partner with Belfast as our ‘innovation twin’ city. Sejong is the first city in the world to achieve international recognition as a smart city. We are building our knowledge and expertise to be the future strategic capital of the Republic of Korea and welcome the opportunity to partner with Belfast to achieve our ambitions.

“We believe there are rich opportunities for research and commercial collaboration between our two cities. By collaborating on proposals outlined in the Roadmap, we can accelerate both cities’ ambitions for economic development, trade and investment and, most importantly, enhance lives and opportunities for our citizens.”

Dr. Stephen McCabe, Head of Project Delivery at Queen’s University Belfast’s Momentum One Zero innovation centre, said: “Through our Queen’s-led innovation centres in advanced manufacturing, clinical research and secure, connected digital technologies, we’re growing research and innovation capabilities for businesses across Northern Ireland and beyond. A key part of that is about building partnerships to help to transform our region’s digital economy.

“It’s an exciting time for Belfast and Northern Ireland to build international collaborations to allow us to leverage our region’s strengths to grow trade and exchange knowledge with the rest of the world.

“Queen’s University has had long-standing engagements with South Korean research organisations for many years and, most recently, we have seen the success of a mutual commitment with Korean University Sejong on cybersecurity to drive transformative advancements in the field. We look forward to building on initiatives like these through the Innovation Twins programme.”

Innovation Twins builds upon existing cybersecurity collaborations between Kora University Sejong and Queen’s University Belfast; and a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Sejong Technopark and Invest Northern Ireland.

During the current visit, Belfast’s Catalyst is signing with Sejong Technopark to support opportunities for Belfast’s innovators and entrepreneurs. While Sejong’s Climate Neutrality Centre is signing an MoU with the Belfast Climate Commission to work towards a Green City Accelerator for local industry.

Vital Investment for Youth Mental Health Through PEACEPLUS

The roll-out of the €1.14 billion PEACEPLUS Programme continues to gather pace with the announcement this week of €20 million for Youth Mental Health and Well-being services.

Northern Ireland has some of the highest levels of mental ill-health among children and young people in Europe.

In 2020, the Youth Well-being Survey, funded by the Department of Health, found that rates of anxiety and depression are around 25% higher in the child and youth population in Northern Ireland compared to the rest of the UK.

In Ireland, the 2023 national Children and Young People’s Indicator Set shows a significant decline in the numbers of young people reporting optimal levels of mental health over the past decade, while research by the Economic and Social Research Institute has shown the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in particular on the mental health of young adults in Ireland.

The reasons for the higher levels of mental ill-health among children and young people here are difficult to determine. However, the history of violence and the legacy of the conflict is passed down through intergenerational trauma which impacts on young people’s mental health and well-being, their ability to engage with education and their opportunities for employment.

The funding announced today through the PEACEPLUS Programme will support positive interventions aimed at improving the mental health and well-being of thousands of children and young people across Northern Ireland and the border counties.

The funding has been awarded to two projects Our Generation, led by Action Mental Health and Peace of Mind led by Verbal.

These projects will make a considerable contribution to peace and reconciliation through a range of cross-community and cross-border youth mental health and well-being models; peace and reconciliation focused youth leadership programmes; and programmes which instil confidence in young people to act as agents of change, building peace for future generations.

Welcoming today’s announcement, Department of Education Minister, Paul Givan, said: “I welcome this investment in youth work initiatives focussing on mental health of out children and young people. A significant number of our children and young people are facing challenges relating to their mental health and emotional well-being. There is a clear need for a collective effort to provide learning and support in this area to ensure children and young people can manage these challenges and are happy, ready to learn and are thriving.”

Minister Roderic O’Gormon, TD, Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, commented: “I am delighted that funding has now been awarded under this important investment area and that work can shortly begin on these excellent initiatives. A dedicated theme to support community activities to promote young people’s mental health and well-being is a new, and very welcome, addition to the programme. It is an addition that promises to have substantial impacts over the long term, including through providing capacity building for those working within the youth sector. I am delighted that my Department is able to support these cross-border and cross-community efforts and I want to congratulate the organisations involved, as well as the Special EU Programmes Body for its work over a number of years to get us to this point.”

SEUPB Chief Executive, Gina McIntyre, said: “We are immensely pleased to make this announcement today. Creating a better future for all our young people is one of the core objectives of the PEACEPLUS Programme. This funding will support children and young people to overcome mental health challenges which are one of the longest and most challenging legacies of the conflict.

“This vital funding will support childhood development and help to break that chain intergenerational trauma through focused interventions which will provide young people with the tools, knowledge and support to care for their mental health.”

Today’s announcement follows previous PEACEPLUS funding awards for youth services including €45 million for cross-community youth projects and €13 million for formal and non-formal shared learning initiatives.

The PEACEPLUS Programme has been designed to promote peace and prosperity across Northern Ireland and the border counties of Ireland, and has a total value of €1.14 billion, to be delivered over the next five years. The Programme will support a wide range of sectors, including health and social care, the protection of the environment, rural regeneration, smart towns and villages, local regeneration and mental health services.

PEACEPLUS is managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and represents a funding partnership between the European Union, the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the Government of Ireland and the Northern Ireland Executive.
